After spending 2 days in Venice and 4 in Milan, seeing about 15 different hotels and famous Milan sights such as the Duomo and da Vinci’s The Last Supper, I arrived at heavenly Lake Como. The 5 star Villa D’Este is a 500 year old converted monastery on 25 stunning acres directly on the lake…the mountains as a glorious backdrop. There is no more beautiful a spot in the world nor a grander hotel.
This luxury hotel boasts an indoor and outdoor pool, golf nearby, mountain hiking trails directly from the property, every sport you can imagine, as well as the finest spa and dining in the area. The lake front rooms with terraces also have views of the surrounding mountains and are the best in the house. The service of every concierge (and there are many) is outstanding. Easy day trips such as a seaplane ride over the lake, coveted reservations to view The Last Supper or a seat at the famous La Scala Opera House in Milan can easily be arranged.
This area of Italy is quite close to so many other beautiful lake towns like Bellagio, Chernobbio and Como as well as Switzerland. We spent a day in Lugano, Switzerland, a quick 20 minute ride from Villa D’Este, and enjoyed a beautiful stroll in this charming town in the Alps. The cleanest air I have inhaled in years!
Ciao!
