Walking up steep cobblestone steps to get to the hotel overlooking Lake Como and dining in a sidewalk café is as romantic as it gets! We reached this small town of 3000 people by boat from the other side of the lake. Many locals who live and work in different towns on the lake travel like this.
Our guide walked us through charming gardens and narrow streets, greeting friends and neighbors as we passed. I am proud of my own Fairfield, Connecticut, but these folks glow with pride for their town! This atmosphere has attracted well known celebrities like George Clooney and Versace, who own villas on this beautiful lake.
A private guide on a boat tour here is invaluable to help learn about and even tour some private villas that are now museums. Hearing all the stories about trade on this famous lake over the centuries was fascinating.
I could return to Italy every year and discover new restaurants, sights and hotels each time. This would be a great family and multi-generational trip; there are many villas with pools to rent, lots of water activities on the lake and terrific golfing nearby. A wonderful travel destination for one and all!!
