The Sandibe Safari Lodge, in the southwestern part of the Okavanga Delta, is tenting luxury with individual casitas-like accommodations. The amazing game drives here offer abundant wild life viewing…giraffe, elephant, monkeys, baboons, impala, leopard, cheetah, as well as more species of birds than I can ever recall. I felt like part of a documentary for National Geographic! I took my kids, who range in age from 19 to 24, and it was our first time in this country after visiting East Africa 2 1/2 years ago. The amount of game is very different here. In East Africa, one can see herds of zebra and wildebeeste during migration, but there are also 10 vans filled with tourists, all vying for the best photo ops, while in Botswana, the camps have only 16 people in 8 tents and only 3 open range rovers in a huge area. You rarely see another human being or vehicle. Unlike some areas, in the Okavanga Delta you also have lots of sightseeing options like a walking safari, fishing or a boatride on a macoro (a dugout canoe).
No need to worry about visas, shots or safety. We took anti-malaria pills daily and had a typhoid shot a while back. The food at these lodges is wonderful and there are at least 2 staff to every guest…our own ranger and animal tracker were assigned to us for our entire stay! As soon as I return back to the states, look for photos! Next stop, Ngala Camp, South Africa….!
